Chapter 18

The Softest Whispers

Nick clicked on his headset as he was making his way back to the front of the plane.

“Brick?” he said, as soon as he saw the light indicating the other picked up. “We need to bring down the plane. Malek thinks we’re about to be attacked––”

The plane shuddered.

Nick lurched sideways.

He managed to grip the nearest seat…

The wings tilted down and rolled to the left.

He lost his grip, thrown back into the next aisle, where he managed to stop himself on another chair. Gasping in shock, he turned, just I time to see Wynter, Malek, Tai, Morley, Jordan, and Kit thrown in the direction of the organic glass cage. Wynter landed right in the middle of it, within inches of where Yi stood, her palms pressed into the glass.

She stood there, gripping the pale green cylinder, panting into Yi’s face, only that transparent wall between them.

Nick saw the seer smile.

He saw the predatory look that rose to the seer’s eyes, a faint flicker of heat.

Seeing the stare Yi fixed on her––on her face, her throat, her breasts, down her waist to her legs––an uncontrollable rage rose in Nick, half-blinding him. It wasn’t just the depth of the desire he saw there.

It was something else.

Something… premeditated.

Nick growled, low in his chest, when the plane jerked again.

Wynter gripped the cage, trying to hold on. Around her, Kit, Tai, Morley, and Jordan all grabbed one another, but ended up on the floor.

…all but Malek, who somehow held perfectly still, surfing the movement of the plane’s roll, even as he continued to stare into the shimmering organic glass. He looked past and through Wynter as if she wasn’t there.

From his face, Malek was struggling, fighting something.

Or, more likely, someone.

That feeling only strengthened when Malek spoke to Wynter.

“Sister!” he yelled, above the suddenly audible security alarm. “Sister! I need you! Don’t let him break your concentration!”

Nick remembered Brick.

He remembered someone was flying the plane.

Realizing his sire never answered him, Nick tore his focus off his girlfriend and his friends, looking for the live signal in his headset.

The line had dropped.

“Fuck.” He hit in Brick’s signal code a second time.

He struggled back to standing from where he’d been thrown halfway into the few rows of seats near the curtain dividing the back area from the front cabin of the plane. He began to walk back the way he’d come, back to Wynter and his friends, but the plane lurched again, this time rolling starboard, towards the opposite side of the plane.

Nick got thrown again, violently that time.

He half landed on a seat in the last row, his knee jammed between an armrest and the main cushion. He turned his head to see Jordan and Morley still on the floor, with Tai and Kit, and now Wynter was with them, after being thrown backwards by the force of the plane’s roll.

Again, only Malek seemed somehow immune, somehow able to remain upright.

Nick glanced at the seer’s cage.

He saw Yi watching all of them now, not only Wynter.
